New Look Kitchen Refacing refaces kitchens in every neighborhood of Manhattan, working from our Farmingdale shop on Long Island. Cabinet refacing replaces the doors, drawer fronts and hardware and veneers the exposed frames over your existing boxes, so the plumbing and layout stay untouched, which is why it suits co-op and condo apartments. Our own installers do the work under NYC Home Improvement Contractor #1229993-DCA, and most kitchens are finished in three to five days.

You Can't Move the Pipes, So Reface What You See

In an apartment, the sink, the stove and the walls are rarely yours to relocate. Plumbing and gas run through the building, and moving them is the kind of alteration a board has to review. Refacing leaves all of that where it is: new doors, drawer fronts and hardware go onto the boxes you already have, and every exposed frame is covered in a matching veneer.

That makes it the right job when the layout works and the kitchen only looks worn. If you want a wall opened or an appliance moved, it is a remodel, and we will say so at the estimate rather than put new doors on a plan that needs more.

Is Refacing Worth It in a Small Manhattan Kitchen?

In a big suburban kitchen the eye travels. In a galley or an L-shaped apartment kitchen it has nowhere to go, because every door and drawer front is within arm's reach and the whole room is read in a glance. The finish carries more of the room's character than it would anywhere else.

That cuts both ways. A worn door is more obvious in a compact kitchen, and a clean new one changes the whole space. The Manhattan kitchens further down this page are mostly that size: a few walls of cabinets, one window, and a surface that does a lot of work.

Can Refacing Handle Peninsulas, Open Ends and Awkward Corners?

Older apartments are full of cabinet runs that were built to fit a particular wall: a peninsula that finishes in open shelves, a corner that is not square, a pantry that goes to the ceiling. None of that has to change. Doors and fronts are made to your cabinets' measurements, and the exposed sides and ends are veneered to match, so a peninsula looks finished from the dining room as well as from the stove.

An open shelf at the end of a peninsula is typical of what we mean. The shelves stay, the box stays, and what you see from across the room is new.

Before You Book Anyone in a Co-op or Condo

Manhattan buildings set their own rules for alteration work. Before you hire anyone, check your alteration agreement or proprietary lease and ask your managing agent three things: whether cabinet work needs board approval, which days and hours contractors may work, and how materials and debris get in and out. Those answers shape the calendar more than the job does.

Then check the contractor. New York City requires a home improvement contractor license from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, and a Nassau or Suffolk license does not cover Manhattan. New Look is licensed and insured, and holds NYC Home Improvement Contractor #1229993-DCA, which is valid across all five boroughs. Ask any contractor for theirs, and confirm it with the city before you sign.

Bring whatever your building gives you to the estimate, and we will tell you plainly whether the job fits.

Three Steps, Whatever the Building

The same three stages as on Long Island: measure, make, install. What a building adds is a few questions to settle before the first day, and the estimate is the right time to ask them.

  1. Request a free estimate

We bring the showroom to you — doors, finishes and hardware, seen in your own kitchen light.

  2. Create your new look

Choose the door style, color, countertop and hardware with a designer, not a catalog.

  3. Schedule your install

Our own installers reface the kitchen in 3–5 days and clean up every evening.

Refacing Against a Full Remodel

In a building, the cost of a remodel is not only the cabinets: it is the demolition, the weeks without a kitchen and whatever your board has to review. Refacing leaves the layout, the plumbing and the walls alone, which can shrink what needs approving. Ask your managing agent first, because that decision is theirs, not ours. Refacing is also a different job from repainting: here is how it differs from refinishing.

Refaced cabinets and drawer fronts in a bright kitchenA refaced kitchen with grey shaker cabinets, an apron sink and hardwood floors

Refacing replaces the visible parts of your cabinets, the doors, drawer fronts and hardware, and covers the exposed frames in a matching veneer. The cabinet boxes stay where they are, so the plumbing, the gas line and the layout are untouched. In an apartment, that is usually the difference between a cosmetic job and an alteration, which matters because many co-op and condo boards review alterations before work starts. Most kitchens take three to five days. If you would move the sink, the stove or a wall, that is a remodel and refacing is not the right answer, and we will say so at the estimate.
